Hand wash
Hand wash only. 40°C maximum, or cooler still on a recent label.
Dissolve the detergent in the water before the garment goes anywhere near it, let it float rather than scrubbing, and press the water out instead of wringing. Do not leave it lying wet. The 2023 revision of the international standard added a second version of this symbol for washing at ambient temperature, roughly 20 to 30°C, for articles where even hand-hot water is too much; if a label is recent and the water feels warm to you, it is probably too warm for the garment.
Where it sits on the label
- Washing
- Bleaching
- Drying
- Ironing
- Professional care
Washing comes first of the five. A label is always written in this order and simply leaves out whatever does not apply, so a tag carrying only three symbols is not missing anything. The next shape along yours is the next of these its maker had something to say about.
